Goals first.
Nothing acts without a goal it can name.
After more than two decades studying how people make decisions through his online consumer research company Pureprofile, founder Paul Chan arrived at an unmoveable insight: the best decisions at every level of an organisation follow a logic that can be designed, taught and, ultimately, automated.
For decades, software has repeated steps. It does the same thing each time it's told to, and it never knows why.
Software can now choose its next step. That's useful only if it knows what it's for, what it may and may not do, who confirms a decision and how to take an action back. We think the missing layer, the one that holds the goals, the rules and the record, is where the real work now sits.
We're also honest about where the idea stops. A goal-first system is only as good as the goals people give it, and some decisions always belong to a named person.
